LaCie Sphère, hard drive designed by Christofle

June 30, 2014 • Business

French luxury brand Christofle combined its unique know-how of silvercraft with high technology, by collaborating with LaCie to create a new hard drive – a genuinely functional work of art.

Silversmith Christofle designs a high-tech hard drive

Founded in 1830, silversmith and jeweller Christofle aims to design items coinciding with its client’s needs and desires. It is this ambition which has led to creation of the LaCie and Christofle partnership for the conception of this unique hard drive.

The sphere has been stamped with Christofle’s hallmark signature, then polished to obtain a smooth  bright and reflective surface. Silver-plated, this hand-crafted sphere of technology adds prestige to any working space and will no doubt turn heads and be the subject of many conversations.

As practical as its beautiful, the LaCie sphere hides well that it is in reality a high-end piece of technology.

LaCie sphère: combining design and cutting edge technology

The LaCie sphère features a high-speed USB 3.0, which serves as a both a data cable and power cable, making file transfer and backups nearly three times fasterthan the USB 2.0.

With its 1TB of storage, the sphere has enough space to store years of backups or an extensive photo, video, and music library. LaCie has its own sftware suite on the drive, including a Backup Assistant and a private-public software.

A blue LED on the front of the sphere indicates the drive’s status. An Eco Mode will also keep energy usage low.

LaCie’s CEO and board chairman Philippe Spruch said, “With the Sphère, LaCie and Christofle have once again thought outside the box. In an industry where square thinking is the rule, this product reflects LaCie’s innovative edge.

The LaCie Sphère will be available for the handsome price of  390 euros or 490 US dollars with a 2-year limited warranty. The sphere is compatible with both PCs and Macs.
